November 11th: Reykjavik
Begin your journey in beautiful Reykjavík, where we will transport you to your lodging downtown. From there, take some time to explore Reykjavík’s unique and charming features. Reykjavík is an eclectic city, apart from charming pubs, a towering statue of Leif Erickson, unique Nordic foods, Iceland’s quirky shops, colorful street art, and strange attractions provide for all sorts of discoveries. Stop into a small shop of trinkets, or learn about why half of Iceland’s residents believe in elves by visiting their elf school. After dinner, don't forget to look up! It isn't uncommon to see the Northern Lights from downtown Reykjavík.

November 13th: Vik
Today we begin heading South. Watch outside the window as the flat snowy landscape forms into massive mountains and crashing surf. Apart from watching the mountains on our left and the sea go by on our right, you'll need to be camera-ready as we will stop at some of the most iconic waterfalls in all of Iceland. Each towering at nearly two hundred feet tall, both Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss afford differing composition opportunities and guaranteed awe. We will discuss long exposure and composition techniques for capturing these icy falls, and also have the potential for nighttime photography. These waterfalls are only a short jaunt from where we will be staying, so if the forecast is right, we'll head back, as darkness falls, to capture these iconic, Icelandic landscapes under the Northern Lights. We will be staying in the small hamlet of Vik, a quaint town bordered on either side by black sand beaches and towering peaks. Highlights: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Seljavallalaug Hot Spring, and the Skogafoss Waterfall

November 15th: Kirkjufell
Northward! On this day we begin heading to areas where the aurora will be even easier to see. Game of Thrones fans will rejoice as we begin our journey to the “mountain that looks like an arrowhead” or Kirkjufell. What the popular HBO series did not include, however, is that this mountain is preceded by a beautiful flowing waterfall, gifting us perhaps the most iconic Northern Lights photo one can capture in Iceland. On the way, we will stop at Gullfoss, the largest volume waterfall in Europe, and Brúarfoss, an electric blue waterfall that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding snow. With an eye on the forecast, we will look to see if we will be able to capture the Northern Lights dancing over Kirkjufell.
Highlights: Gulfoss Waterfall, Bruarfoss Waterfall, and the Secret Lagoon Hot Spring
Accommodations: Kirkjufell Guesthouse and Apartments

November 16th: Kirkjjufell
Today we photograph Kirkjjufell, discussing long exposure techniques to photograph the landscape with the flowing waterfall and towering mountain behind. With an eye on the forecast, we will have a second day at photographing Kirkjufell by night for a chance at the aurora.

November 17th: Húsavík
Today, after weaving through fjords and the rugged beauty of Iceland’s Northern stretches, we will arrive at Húsavík. On the way, we will stop at Kolugljúfur Waterfall and a beautiful horseshoe-shaped falls, Goðafoss. Once again we'll photograph the landscape during the day, while also observing potential nighttime framing opportunities for those who may want to explore it at night. Being only 36 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Húsavík will be our base for northern light viewing for the rest of the trip.
Highlights: Kolugljúfur Waterfall, Godafoss Waterfall, and Nighttime sailing adventure to see Northern Lights (Weather permitting)
Accommodations: Árból Guesthouse

November 18th: Húsavík
Highlighted in the Will Ferrell film, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” Húsavík is a charming oceanside fishing village beneath towering mountains. Here’s the chance to take a load off and relax. You've earned it! Explore the charming restaurants, grab a beer in one of the fishing pubs, or maybe visit the Húsavík whale museum. At night we will be partnering with North Sailing, an ecologically minded whale watching and sailboat tour company, to take to the seas and observe the Northern Lights under sail. Enjoy a hot chocolate (with whiskey or not) and hopefully watch the Northern Lights dance over the mountains and ocean. Those that want a more adventurous day have the option of doing a hike up Hverfell volcano and then soaking in the natural hot springs near the volcano’s base.
Highlights: Hverfell Volcano Hike, Mývatn Nature Baths, Gatanöf, GeoSea: Geothermal Sea Baths
Accommodations: Árból Guesthouse

November19th: Husavik
With so much to do in Húsavík that is dependent upon the weather, we will be maintaining a somewhat flexible schedule while on location here. We will only embark on one night-time Northern Lights sailing tour but have three days to do so to maximize our chances of seeing the Northern Lights. If weather cooperates, we'll take to the seas in search of Húsavík Bay's resident population of Humpback whales. We'll be hunting for a shot of the whales' enormous tales framed by the bay's icy mountains.
Highlights: Diamond Circle, Whale watching tour
Accommodations: Árból Guesthouse
